A New Chapter: Beginning My Fellowship Journey at B&B Hospital

Dr. Sulabh Kumar Shrestha, MS Orthopedics, Nov 5, 2025Nov 5, 2025

I will be sharing my fellowship journey from my journal here. The posts will be backdated and hopefully I will catchup eventually.

Dated: July 15, 2025

As I begin this fellowship training in Hip, Pelvi-Acetabulum, and Arthroplasty at B&B Hospital for one year, I felt like taking a step back and recalling the journey that I traveled to reach here – a journey of applications, exams, interviews, decisions, and suspense.

In the previous months before this opportunity, I sat for fellowship entrance exams at several centers: NAMS, IOM, Kirtipur Hospital, Grande International Hospital, and Ganga Hospital (Coimbatore, India). There were struggles and lessons in each experience.

I joined the waiting lists in NAMS and IOM, which was encouraging but not decisive. I was selected at Kirtipur Hospital but did not take up the opportunity due to a high admission fee and relatively low stipend – something that matters in a one-year course. At Grande Hospital, I reached the interview stage but was unsuccessful.

My most fascinating experience was with Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, where I scored 1st in the entrance of both the Arthroplasty and Spine Fellowship. But I wasn’t interviewed for the Arthroplasty fellowship. When I appeared for the spine fellowship interview, I had already been selected in B&B Hospital, so I told them that I won’t be able to work there. It was a difficult decision, but an appropriate one.

Before embarking on this transition, I was practicing in Om Hospital and Tarakeshwar City Hospital, where I was getting the hands-on experience in general orthopedics and trauma. I went on leave in both these hospitals to concentrate fully on this fellowship experience.

This fellowship is an exciting and tremendous leap. Within the coming year, I look forward to immersing myself in the intricacies of pelvic and hip surgery, joint replacement, and reconstructive orthopedics. I also look forward to being presented with new challenges and lessons, not just in surgical skills but also in clinical decision-making, communication, and team collaboration.

On this blog, I will be sharing my learnings, fascniating cases, occasional mistakes, and day-to-day experiences in the OR and outside of it. I hope to make it a resource and thought for fellow trainees, colleagues, and anyone who is interested in orthopedic surgery’s art and science.

Cheers to a year of learning, humility, and purpose.
